Video: Global Change Games: Beyond Blue

This event is part of the Global Change Games series.

Through the use of fictional scenarios, games help us explore and reflect on the challenging and sometimes frightening problems we face. In this series we will livestream gameplay and discuss how climate change games help us understand and grapple with the diverse and interrelated problems resulting from rapid global change.

Our oceans are under threat from climate change, overfishing, and pollution. Inspired by the BBC series Blue Planet II, Beyond Blue takes players into the near future, where they explore the mysteries of our ocean through the eyes of Mirai, a deep-sea explorer and scientist. The game invites players to imagine what our ocean’s future might be.

In this event, Electrical & Computer Engineering PhD student Selene Schmittling will play Beyond Blue and talk about how this game challenges players to find hope and feel agency amidst a natural environment under pressure. She will be joined by Dr. Vicky Thayer of the NC State Center for Marine Sciences and Technology, who will talk about the science on which the game is based.
